Big Rock

Sandy’s brother Rob was down from Rexburg for the weekend, so we went out to Big Rock to do some climbing. Eli came with us and got to break in his new climbing shoes! He did a great – the first short climb we did he was a little scared to climb to the anchor so he lowered off and then I climbed up and had Rob tie him in and then he climbed up to me. It was awesome to sit up there (only about 50ft) with him and review the climb and show him the ropes. Rob led a longer pitch next (about 95ft) and I tied Eli in and he “cleaned” the pitch. He did a great job and was very careful to clip each quickdraw to his harness. Once he was up there with Rob (who took all the photos of him climbing up) we almost convinced him to stay there with Rob while I climbed up to allow us to all climb the next pitch. The thought of going up higher was too much, but afterward he thought he would want to do it. Eli is still a bit too small to belay me, so we are looking for a climbing partner to come and climb a few easy pitches with us.

I am terrified of being up high, especially without a railing! What a brave little man.
